Snowy conditions will impact the central third of the country on Thursday, while a warm weather pattern shifts over the Ohio Valley.
A low pressure system will strengthen as it moves east northeastward from the central Rockies to the upper Mississippi Valley. This system is expected to bring light to moderate snow to the central and northern Rockies throughout Thursday morning and afternoon. By Thursday afternoon, strong winds and moderate to heavy snow will break out across the northern Plains and the western tier of the upper Midwest. Blizzard watches are in effect for southeast South Dakota, eastern North Dakota and western Minnesota. A cold frontal boundary extending southwestward will produce a mixture of rain and snow in the central Plains. There will also be chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms in the southern Plains and the lower Mississippi Valley.
Meanwhile, an area of low pressure will push north northeastward across southeast Canada and the western Atlantic. Early morning showers will remain a possibility for northern Maine before conditions dry out across the Northeast. A ridge of high pressure will usher relatively warm air over the Ohio Valley and the northern Mid-Atlantic.
Out west, an onshore flow from the Pacific will keep light to moderate showers in the forecast for western Washington and western Oregon. Most of the Southwest will stay dry on Thursday.
