Stormy conditions will break out over the central third of the country on Tuesday, while another Pacific system brings rain to the Northwest.
An area of low pressure will shift east northeastward across the central Plains and the middle Mississippi Valley. This system, combined with a cold frontal boundary, will initiate showers and thunderstorms across the central Plains, the southern Plains, the middle Mississippi Valley, the lower Mississippi Valley and the western edge of the Ohio Valley. Severe thunderstorms will be possible in eastern Texas. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. A mixture of rain, freezing rain and snow will develop along the northern periphery of the low pressure system and affect the northern Plains and the upper Midwest.
Meanwhile, lake effect snow will taper off downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario as temperatures moderate over the Great Lakes and the Northeast. Most of the Mid-Atlantic and the Southeast will stay clear of precipitation.
Out west, a Pacific system will move onshore over the Northwest. Moderate to heavy rain and mountain snow will impact Washington, Oregon and northern California. Winter weather advisories will go into effect for the northern Sierra Nevada by late Tuesday afternoon.
