Flooding in San Antonio Leads to Water Rescues, Road Closures

Torrential rainfall led to flooding that closed roads and even some schools in the San Antonio area Monday morning.
Rainfall rates up to 3 inches per hour fell on parts of Bexar County prior to the morning commute, and before the event was over, up to 7 inches of total rainfall had been reported. Prior to 8 a.m. CDT, San Antonio International Airport had already reported 4.56 inches of rain, making it the city's wettest September day in more than 38 years.
At the airport, the average rainfall for the entire month of September is 3.03 inches.
"A slowly migrating band of heavy rain set up over the San Antonio metro area Monday, thanks to upper-level disturbances rotating around a low-pressure system backing up over Baja California," said weather.com meteorologist Jon Erdman.

KENS-TV said the heavy rainfall led to water rescues in multiple places around the city, and some streets had to be closed after they became inundated with flood water. The City of San Antonio has a complete list of road closures due to the flooding.
Among those road closures were parts of interstates 35 and 10, as both freeways rapidly took on water, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
"As long as it’s raining, we’re going to have some issues," Texas Department of Transportation spokeswoman Laura Lopez told the Express-News.
The floods also affected schools in the area. The Leakey Independent School District canceled Monday classes, KENS also reported, while Judson ISD and Southside ISD said some of their buses were delayed by flooding.
