The weather through Friday will be free of snow and ice for the Philadelphia area. However, wintry precipitation is possible this weekend.
Mild weather is in store through Wednesday with temperatures reaching the lower 50s in some areas.
The normal average high for the city during the third week of December is in the middle 40s.
Chilly air will settle into the region Thursday into Friday, ahead of a storm system forecast to move up from the South Central states this weekend. The chilly air will bring at least two days of sunshine, before the next storm arrives.
While the exact track and strength of that storm will determine how much snow and ice, versus rain falls on the area, there is the potential for significant travel problems on what could end up being the busiest shopping weekend of the year, nationally.
The stormy weather pattern with just enough chilly air to cause some snow and ice travel issues will continue into the week between Christmas and New Year's Day and beyond. There could be as many as three storms with snow, ice and/or rain affecting the Northeast states through the start of the new year.

Temperatures thus far this December have averaged 0.8 degrees F above normal (30-year average) compared to the first two weeks from last December and during this November. Temperatures averaged 1.6 and 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit below normal respectively for Philadelphia.
