Europe Storm Brings Welcomed Snow to Ski Resorts

While a large winter storm will create major travel disruptions in portions of Europe through early this week, ski areas are welcoming the fresh power that is blanketing mountains from the Alps and Apennines into the Balkans.
The storm recently brought accumulating snow to England.
Timing of this snow is just right for people looking to get away over the holidays. Folks that can get to the resorts will be skiing in over 30 cm (12 inches) of fresh snow.
In the Alps, snow was winding down on Sunday with only light additional accumulations expected. However, over 30 cm (12 inches) of snow will have already fallen on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in the Dinaric Alps from Bosnia and Herzegovina to Albania, snow was just starting on Sunday. Snow will continue in these mountains into Monday. By storms-end on on Tuesday, 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) of snow will blanket some of the resorts.
A similar situation will set up across the southern Carpathian Mountains in Romania from Sunday night into Monday as heavy snow and wind sweep across the region.

Snow will also be heavy in the Apennine Mountains in central Italy, but snow levels will range from 300 m (1000 feet) in the north to about 900 m (3,000) in the south. As a result, only the higher peaks will see the heaviest snow.
Cold air coming in the wake of this storm will ensure that the freshly fallen snow remains well into the new year and ski conditions remain optimal.
