Weather Underground Forecast for Wednesday,December 31,2014
Arctic high pressure will impact the Plains and the Midwest on Wednesday, while a low pressure system will affect the Southwest.
A high pressure system will sink southeastward over the central and southern Plain, as well as the middle Mississippi Valley. This system will bring bitter cold arctic air to a large portion of the country. Temperatures will be 25 to 40 degrees below normal across the Intermountain West, the Plains and the Midwest. There will be a chance of rain, freezing rain and snow across Texas. Showers will also develop along the western Gulf Coast as a trough of low pressure forms over the Gulf of Mexico. Conditions will stay relatively clear across the Deep South and the Southeast.
Meanwhile, cold air will interact with the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, triggering moderate snow across the Great Lakes and portions of the Northeast. Heavy snow showers will be possible over the northwest New York.
A vigorous low pressure system will slide across the Southwest on Wednesday. Snow levels will drop as low as 2,000 feet across the Desert Southwest, the Great Basin and the southern Rockies. Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories are already in place across southern California, southern Nevada, Arizona and Utah. High pressure will build across the Northwest, keeping weather conditions calm over the Pacific Northwest and the upper Intermountain West.
