Colder Air, Snow Showers Return to Northeast Christmas Day

Following a wet, mild Christmas Eve across much of the Northeast, a windy and chillier Christmas Day is on the way.
Christmas morning, though, will still be very mild along the I-95 corridor, where temperatures in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington will be near 60. Temperatures will then fall into the 40s during the afternoon.
Across the interior Northeast, temperatures will go from near or above 50 on Wednesday to the 30s for much of Christmas Day.
Even though temperatures will fall Christmas Day, the wind will be the big story throughout the Northeast, with gusts over 40 mph. According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Carl Babinski, "The strongest wind gusts will be across upstate New York and northern New England, closer to the departing storm system in eastern Canada."

Gusts could also exceed 40 mph along the coast, Babinski added, including places like the Jersey Shore, Long Island and Cape Cod.
These high wind gusts could lead to airport delays.
A storm system tracking through the Great Lakes Wednesday will be responsible for the change. After pumping in a mild southwest flow on Wednesday, the flow behind the storm will be out of the west-northwest as it moves into eastern Canada.
While temperatures during the afternoon this Christmas Day will be noticeably lower than Christmas Eve, they'll still be pretty close to average for this time of year. The gusty wind, though, will add a chill to the air.
This mild spell prior to Christmas is similar to last year when temperatures surged past 70 degrees last Dec. 22 in both New York City and Washington, D.C.

Because the air behind the storm will not be that much colder, a major lake-effect snow event is not anticipated. The westerly wind will bring snow showers to Watertown, New York, and Erie, Pennsylvania. Any accumulations should be light and travel problems should be limited throughout the day thanks to temperatures being above freezing.
The cooldown for Christmas Day will be brief because temperatures will be on the rebound again for Friday and Saturday. A southwesterly flow will resume, pushing afternoon temperatures into the 40s and 50s.
