Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday,November 20,2014
Lake effect snow will continue to impact the Northeast on Thursday, while a series of Pacific systems will affect the Northwest.
A deep trough of low pressure will shift eastward over the Great Lakes and the Northeast. This system will usher cold, arctic air over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes to initiate heavy lake effect snow. Heavy snow showers will develop downwind of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, focusing over northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York. Several feet of snow will accumulate over the three states on Thursday. Additionally, light to moderate snow showers will develop over the central Appalachians and northwest New England. This arctic air mass will keep temperatures 20 to 40 degrees below normal from the Plains to the Eastern Seaboard.
Meanwhile, moisture will pool northward from the Gulf of Mexico, triggering scattered showers and thunderstorms over the western Gulf Coast and the lower Mississippi Valley.
Out west, a series of low pressure systems will move onshore over the Northwest. During the morning, moderate rain will develop over the Pacific Northwest and parts of northern California. By the afternoon and evening, high elevation snow showers will develop across the Cascades, the northern Rockies and the Sierra Nevada. A mixture of rain and snow will also be possible over the Great Basin, while southern California will have a slight chance of late evening showers.
