An arctic air mass will spread across the eastern half of the country on Wednesday, while a Pacific system will affect the West Coast.
A trough of low pressure will shift across the central and eastern thirds of the country on Wednesday. As this system ushers cold, arctic air over the Great Lakes, lake effect snow will develop downwind of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. The strongest snow showers will impact western Michigan, northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania and western New York. Accumulations will approach 2.0 feet in portions of New York. Additionally, scattered snow showers will be possible over the upper Mississippi Valley, the Ohio Valley and parts of New England. Conditions will remain mostly clear from the southern Plains to the Southeast. Temperatures will stay 20 to 30 degrees below normal from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast.
Meanwhile, a calm weather pattern will persist across much of the western states on Wednesday. By the late afternoon and evening, a Pacific system will approach the West Coast, bringing rainy weather to parts of northern California, Oregon and southwest Washington. High elevation snow showers will be possible over the northern Sierra Nevada and the Cascades. During the late evening, snow showers will begin to develop over the northern Rockies, while light rain will occur over the Great Basin.
