A system in the Gulf of Mexico will send a surge of warmth and wet weather towards Detroit this weekend.
Frigid conditions across much of the country will still be the story in the city and surrounding suburbs as winterlike weather is expected to persist through the end of the week.
Light snow showers will come to an end Friday as northwesterly winds and lake-effect snow begin to diminish.
Encroaching warmth from a developing system in the Gulf of Mexico will allow noticeably warmer air to advance northward to the Great Lakes and Northeast.
High temperatures will trend upward from the 30s to near 50F this weekend.
As the warmth continues to advance and build, clouds and rain will begin to overrun the region on Saturday.
With the recent lake-effect snowfall, the expected warmup and rainfall could lead to some localized flooding as large amounts of snow melt will gather on roadways and sideways due to blocked drainage.
