Flooding Claims at Least 12 Lives in Bulgaria

A slow-moving storm system brought heavy rain to much of southern and southeastern Europe this week causing flooding from Italy to Bulgaria.
On Thursday, the flooding turned deadly in Bulgaria as at least 12 people died and more remain missing according to the Associated Press. The worst of the flooding was reported across eastern parts of the country.
Areas around Varna, the third largest city in Bulgaria, were among the hardest hit. Rainfall this week has totaled 165 mm (6.50 inches) in the city, more than double the monthly average of 65 mm (2.56 inches).

Police in Varna have confirmed that at least 10 of the deaths occurred in flood waters within the Black Sea resort city, according to the Associated Press.
Many houses remain flooded while cars were swept away by the raging flood waters.
The Prime Minister of Bulgaria has declared Monday, June 23, a national day of mourning for the flooding tragedy.

While there will continue to be isolated showers and thunderstorms across the region through Saturday, the heaviest rainfall has shifted to the north and east.
Even with some isolated rainfall, drier conditions overall will aid any recovery efforts across the region through the weekend.
The next threat for widespread rainfall across eastern Bulgaria will arrive Tuesday night into Wednesday.
