Tropical Storm Allison developed on June 4, 2001, and caused widespread flooding across southeastern Texas as the storm slowly moved across the area during the first half of the month. The storm brought more than 40 inches of rain in Texas before drifting back into the Gulf of Mexico and then bringing heavy rain to parts of Louisiana and the Southeast. In total, more than 40 people were killed by the storm.
