Wind-Driven Rain to Snarl Boston's Thanksgiving Travel

While Boston will escape a snowstorm this week, wind-driven rain still threatens to cause a nightmare for Thanksgiving travelers on Wednesday.
After a dry Monday with less wind than Sunday, the storm that brought a wintry mess to Oklahoma City and Dallas over the weekend will turn toward the Northeast on Tuesday.
Rain will reach Boston Tuesday night, then will fall heavily Wednesday.
While the rain could end as a little snow Wednesday night, the storm's substantial snow will instead center on the Appalachians and St. Lawrence Valley.

The rain will generally amount to 2 to 4 inches, which could lead to flash flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas.
Even where flooding does not ensue, the soaking rain threatens to severely snarl Thanksgiving travel for those both on the ground and in the air.

Motorists will be forced to slow down as water ponding on roadways threatens to heighten the risk of vehicles hydroplaning at highway speeds. Downpours will greatly reduce visibility.
The heavy rain and accompanying low-hanging clouds could lead to lengthy delays at Logan International Airport.
Worsening the situation will be the gusty winds that will develop by Wednesday, which will further whip the rain around, reduce visibility and make the day less desirable to be outside. There is also concern for coastal flooding to ensue on Wednesday.

The rain will leave Boston Wednesday night with a dry day set to unfold for Thanksgiving Day. However, blustery winds howling on the storm's backside will make for a cold Thursday.
