Weather Underground midday recap for Tuesday,November 26,2013
An active weather system continued to impact the East Coast on Tuesday,
while a ridge of high pressure kept the West Coast calm and sunny.
Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories were issued across
the Ohio Valley, the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast on Tuesday as snow,
sleet and freezing rain moved across the regions. The heaviest snow fell
in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, while sleet and freezing rain
affected West Virginia, Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. State
College, Pa., reported a midday total of 3.80 inches of snow, while
Lemont, Pa., reported a midday total of 3.0 inches of snow. Flood
warnings were also issued across parts of the Northeast as rain and
thunderstorms pushed across the Eastern Seaboard. Meanwhile to the
south, Tornado warnings were issued in Florida and parts of Georgia as a
surge of moisture pushed onshore from the Gulf of Mexico. This frontal
boundary triggered severe thunderstorms over several states in the
Southeast, as Valparaiso, Fla., reported a midday total of 3.98 inches
of rain. Strong winds also accompanied this system, as Fort Polk, La.,
recorded wind speeds of 58 mph.
The central third of the country experienced chilly temperatures on
Tuesday as freeze warnings were issued across the southern Plains. The
northern Plains and upper Midwest experience the coldest morning
temperatures, as Wolf Point, Mont., recorded a morning low of -2
degrees. The West Coast avoided wet weather on Tuesday due to a ridge of
high pressure over the region.
