Tropical Storm Chanthu will brush the eastern coast of Japan into midweek with heavy rain and strong winds.
The storm will move eastward and keep the greatest impacts out of Tokyo, however.
Chanthu will approach the eastern coast of Honshu at the strength of a tropical storm on Tuesday, local time, before crossing over eastern Hokkaido on Wednesday.
"The worst conditions should bypass Tokyo to the east, impacting areas such as Sendai and farther north into eastern Hokkaido," AccuWeather Meteorologist Adam Douty said.
Strengthening into a typhoon is not expected as the system begins to interact with land and move into cooler water.
However, some parts of Japan could be faced with heavy rain and damaging winds.
The city of Kushiro, in eastern Hokkaido, may be one of the hardest-hit areas, with the center of the storm expected to stay west of the city.
"Wind gusts could reach 80-115 km/h (50-70 mph) along the coast of northeastern Honshu and in eastern Hokkaido," Douty said.
Rainfall amounts of 75 to 100 mm (3 to 4 inches) of rainfall will also be possible in this area, raising the risk for flash flooding and mudslides in the higher elevations.

Meanwhile, Tokyo will stay on the western side of the storm center, with less intense rounds of showers and thunderstorms.
Most rainfall totals are expected to stay below 75 mm (3 inches).
"Gusts in Tokyo are expected to remain largely below 50 mph. This should lead to few significant impacts," he said.
