As the weekend comes to a close, the threat for severe weather will continue to progress eastward bringing strong thunderstorms to the central Plains.
The storm system responsible for the strong thunderstorms that brought heavy rainfall, flash flooding, hail and gusty winds to Nebraska and Iowa on Saturday, will target a similar area this afternoon and evening.
According to AccuWeather Senior meteorologist Dan Pydynowski, "Upper-level energy moving eastward across South Dakota later today can cause thunderstorms to develop across central parts of the state, including Pierre."

Storms will move across South Dakota this afternoon, however, thunderstorm activity will intensify through the evening hours Sunday.
Central and eastern South Dakota will be the first locations to be impacted by these severe thunderstorms, which will have the potential to produce heavy rainfall, large hail, gusty winds and even a tornado.
Rapid and heavy rainfall can lead to water pooling on roads, as well as flash flooding conditions.
Thunderstorms will continue to fire eastward through Sunday evening reaching Sioux Falls, South Dakota, before moving to Omaha, Nebraska through Sunday night.

"These storms will then move off to the southeast in the evening and overnight hours, eventually impacting Omaha, Nebraska overnight" Pydynowski continues.
The strongest of these storms will be limited to central and southeastern South Dakota and northeast Nebraska. However, a second area of strong thunderstorms will develop Sunday evening in eastern Kansas before marching east across Missouri, then continuing into western Illinois.
Wichita, Kansas, Springfield and St. Louis, Missouri will be impacted by thunderstorms capable of producing flash flooding and damaging winds.
