Before and After Satellite Images Reveal Devastating Flooding in Myanmar

August 13,2015

Heavy monsoon rains and Tropical Cyclone Komen caused devastating flooding and landslides in parts of Myanmar, Bangladesh and India late July into early August. The extreme rainfall contributed to at least 199 deaths and the destruction of some 55,000 houses in countries surrounding the Bay of Bengal.
Newly released before and after satellite images from NASA are now giving us a broader view of just how severe the flooding has been. According to NASA, the before images show the rivers, including the Irrawaddy, at a normal level about two years ago on Aug. 29, 2013. The second image is from Aug. 3, 2015, showing the bloated rivers after the recent heavy rains.
NASA says that the satellite images use natural color for land areas and false color for the rivers. As a result, you'll notice that the false coloring makes the rivers appear to be bright blue, which makes them easier to distinguish from land since floodwaters are often brown.
