A wintry weather pattern will affect portions of the Rockies on Tuesday, while scattered storms develop along the Gulf Coast.
A low pressure area will lift northeastward over the Mississippi Valley and the upper Great Lakes. This system will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms across parts of the central Plains, the middle Mississippi Valley and the upper Midwest. Just to the west, a cold frontal boundary will extend southwestward from the upper Mississippi Valley to the Great Basin. As this frontal boundary transitions eastward, it will generate rain and embedded thunderstorms across portions of the Intermountain West, the central Plains, the northern Plains and the Midwest. Temperatures will fall 10 to 20 degrees below normal from the Intermountain West and the northern Plains. This cold air mass will support high elevation snow in the central Rockies, the northern Rockies and the northern high Plains. Most states west of the Continental Divide should stay clear of precipitation.
Meanwhile, high pressure will continue to build over the Northeast. This system will keep conditions fairly dry from the Ohio Valley to New England. The same system will influence an onshore flow over the Southeast. Scattered showers will be possible along the coast of North Carolina, Georgia and eastern Florida. In addition, an onshore flow from the Gulf of Mexico will lead to scattered storms along the western Gulf Coast.
