Hurricane Camille smashed onto the Mississippi coast on Aug. 17,1969, with winds over 170 mph and a 24-foot storm surge. Only three Category 5 hurricanes have ever hit the United States. The Labor Day Storm in 1935 was the first; Camille was second; Andrew was the third.
