Weather Underground midday recap for Sunday,August 21,2016

A cold frontal boundary brought stormy conditions to the eastern half of the country on Sunday, while monsoonal thunderstorms persisted in the Southwest.

An area of low pressure moved over eastern Canada. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system extended southwestward from the upper Great Lakes to the western Gulf Coast. Showers and thunderstorms fired up along and ahead of this frontal boundary across western New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the eastern Ohio Valley, the Deep South and parts of the southern Plains. Flood advisories were issued for portions of eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Middletown, Pa., reported a midday total of 2.05 inches of rain. Watertown, N.Y., reported a midday total of 1.30 of an inch of rain. Flash flood warnings were also issued in parts of southern Louisiana and southern Texas. Cotulla, Texas, reported a midday total of 3.76 inches of rain. Cool, dry air settled in west of the frontal boundary. Temperatures dropped 5 to 10 degrees below normal across the northern Plains and the upper Midwest. Hazen, N.D., recorded a morning low of 39 degrees.

Meanwhile, monsoonal thunderstorms popped up across the southern high Plains, the southern Rockies and the Desert Southwest. Flash flood warnings and flood advisories were issued in southeast New Mexico. Roswell, N.M., reported a midday total of 2.19 inches of rain. High pressure kept a warm and dry weather pattern in place over most of the West Coast and the Northwest.
