Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday,August 18,2016

A frontal boundary will affect the northern tier of the country on Thursday, while stormy conditions persist from the southern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic.

An area of low pressure will move east southeastward across central Canada. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will extend southwestward from central Canada to the upper Intermountain West. As this frontal boundary pushes eastward, it will collide with warm and humid air. This interaction will lead to strong to severe thunderstorms over the northern Plains and the upper Mississippi Valley. Severe thunderstorms will be possible in southern North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. Monsoonal thunderstorms will also persist in the central and southern Rockies.

Meanwhile, moisture-rich air will linger over the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast, the Deep South and the southern Plains. Daytime heating will help initiate showers and thunderstorms across a handful of states. Showers and thunderstorms will also develop over parts of the Northeast as a cold frontal boundary approaches the region.

Most areas west of the Continental Divide will stay clear of precipitation as high pressure builds over the eastern Pacific. The exception to this will be in the Sierra Nevada, where isolated thunderstorms will be possible.
