Watches Issued as Severe Storms With Wind Damage and Large Hail Threaten Midwest, Plains

July 6,2016
The threat of severe thunderstorms, with damaging wind gusts, large hail and a few tornadoes, continues across the Plains and Midwest into late-week. This includes the potential for a swath of significant thunderstorm wind damage Wednesday afternoon and evening from South Dakota and northern Nebraska to parts of Iowa and southwest Minnesota.
A few severe storms may also produce damaging wind gusts in parts of the South.
NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has issued the following watch areas:
  • A severe thunderstorm watch valid until 9:00 p.m. CDT is in effect for parts of northwest South Dakota, and southwest North Dakota. This watch area includes Buffalo, South Dakota.
  • A tornado watch valid until 10:00 CDT for southwestern South Dakota, northern Nebraska, and Crook County, Wyoming. This includes Rapid City, South Dakota and Valentine, Nebraska.
  • A severe thunderstorm watch valid until 10:00 p.m. CDT for far northeast Colorado, northwest Kansas and western and central Nebraska. The watch area includes North Platte and McCook, Nebraska and Goodland and Hill City, Kansas.
  • A severe thunderstorm watch valid until 2:00 a.m. CDT for northwest Iowa, southwest Minnesota, northeast Nebraska and eastern South Dakota. This includes Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Enning, South Dakota, saw tea-cup sized hail on Wednesday, which accumulated on the ground and shattered several vehicle windows. Winds of 60 mph allowed those hailstones to pile up in drifts, similar to snow in the winter.
An area of low pressure and its associated cold front is approaching the area today, acting as another triggering mechanism for multiple rounds of thunderstorms to pop up during the afternoon across the Plains. More severe weather is possible ahead of that low as it pushes east Thursday into Friday.
