Active weather will impact the Mid-Atlantic and the central Plains on Thursday, while a ridge of high pressure builds over the Great Basin.
A low pressure area will rotate slowly across southeast Canada. A cold frontal boundary associated with this system will stretch west southwestward from New England to the central Rockies. As this frontal boundary sinks south southeastward, it will merge with a warm frontal boundary, which will set the stage for widespread rain and thunderstorms. Heavy rain and strong to severe thunderstorms will break out across the Mid-Atlantic, the Midwest, the Tennessee Valley, the Mississippi Valley and the central Plains. Severe thunderstorms will be possible in northeast North Carolina, eastern Virginia, southern Maryland, western Kansas, western Nebraska, southeast Wyoming and northeast Colorado. These thunderstorms will be capable of producing large hail, dangerous straight line winds and isolated tornadoes. In addition, heavy rain will bring threats of flash flooding to northern Tennessee, Kentucky, southern Ohio, West Virginia, northwest Virginia, western Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will also affect New England, the upper Midwest and the northern Plains.
Meanwhile, monsoonal moisture and daytime heating will trigger afternoon and evening storms across parts of southern California, Arizona and New Mexico. Most of the Southwest, the Great Basin and the Pacific Northwest will experience warm and dry weather as high pressure builds over Nevada.
