Tropical Storm Agatha Could Intensify in the Eastern Pacific

Tropical Storm Agatha developed Saturday morning, becoming the first named system in the Eastern Pacific this season. Agatha is also the latest first tropical storm in the Eastern Pacific, since reliable records began in 1971.

Tropical Depression Two-E formed well off the the coast of Mexico Friday night before strengthening into a tropical storm Saturday morning.
Tropical Storm Agatha is not expected to directly affect any land areas in the immediate future as it heads west-northwest over the open Pacific waters.
Here's the latest from the National Hurricane Center:
  • Tropical Storm Agatha is located about 875 miles from the southern tip of Baja California, moving west-northwest at 12 mph.
  • Additional strengthening is possible through the night, but weakening is expected to begin on Sunday.
  • Agatha is no threat to any land areas.
