Winter Storm Goliath a Crippling Blizzard in the Southern High Plains; Snow, Ice Spreads to Midwest, New England Monday and Tuesday

Winter Storm Goliath continues to hammer the southern High Plains with dangerous blizzard conditions and drifts up to 10 feet high. NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS) has posted blizzard warnings for parts of this region, including eastern New Mexico, the Texas panhandle and rolling plains, and far western Oklahoma.

Goliath will also spread a swath of snow and ice through the Midwest and into New England Monday into Tuesday. For this reason, a variety of other winter storm warnings and advisories are in effect across the Plains and Midwest from Texas northward to parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.

Winter Storm Goliath Status Now

As of early Sunday evening, snow and wind gusts of 40 mph to 60 mph continued in parts of the southern Highs Plains, particularly eastern New Mexico, western Texas and western Oklahoma. Incredibly, a 70 mph wind gust peeled siding off a home in Clovis, New Mexico, Sunday afternoon.
This is resulting in poor visibility and very dangerous or impossible travel conditions.
Snow drifts of up to 10 feet have been reported in several eastern New Mexico and west Texas counties, where motorists have reportedly been stranded due to the severe blizzard conditions.

Three feet of snow has fallen at Ski Apache in southeast New Mexico. Goliath has dumped up to an estimated 30 inches of snow on Cloudcroft, New Mexico, where strong winds have caused power outages as well. El Paso International Airport picked up 8.1 inches of snow as of Sunday evening, which exceeds their average annual snowfall of 5.5 inches. Parts of the Midland, Texas, metro area picked up 7 inches of snow from Goliath.
Thundersnow has been observed in parts of west Texas as of early Sunday afternoon, including in San Angelo. Light snow and sleet even fell for a few hours Sunday afternoon in Del Rio, Texas, where the last accumulating snow fell in February 2012.
The blizzard conditions have resulted in a closure of parts of Interstate 40 from near Amarillo, Texas, to near Albuquerque, New Mexico. Various other road closures are also impacting eastern New Mexico and west Texas. All travel should be avoided.

Sunday Night
Sunday night, blizzard conditions will continue from parts of eastern New Mexico and west Texas to western Oklahoma, even as snow slowly winds down in New Mexico.
A wintry mix of snow, sleet and some freezing rain will spread across central and eastern Kansas, southeast Nebraska, northern Missouri, southern Iowa and parts of northern Illinois and northern Indiana.

Sunday's Forecast
Monday
The area of low pressure will push towards the Midwest, spreading snow, sleet and freezing rain in a swath from Oklahoma to parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, northern Indiana and northern Ohio. Strong winds gusting to 40 mph will accompany the snow in parts of the Midwest, causing reduced visibility and poor travel conditions in some areas.
A wintry mix may also develop as far east as western Pennsylvania and southwest New York by afternoon. Chicago may see a wintry mix before changing to rain later Monday.
Monday night, a thin area of snow will spread from western, central and Upstate New York into western New England before dawn.
The snow in much of central and western New York, as well as Pennsylvania will only be brief, changing to sleet and freezing rain overnight as it spreads into northern New Jersey.The wintry weather should remain to the northwest of the five boroughs of New York City, though a brief period of sleet or freezing rain can't be ruled out. Boston could see some minor accumulating snow overnight Monday night.
Meanwhile, a swath of snow will continue spreading north in the Upper Midwest Monday night from eastern South Dakota and eastern Nebraska to Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Sleet or freezing rain will mix in over the western Great Lakes from parts of southeast Wisconsin to Lower Michigan, with precipitation changing to rain in the southern Great Lakes overnight.

In the Northeast, a wintry mix is expected from northeast Pennsylvania into central New England, while snow continues in northern New England. Snow or a wintry mix may linger in northern New England into Tuesday night.

Midwest, Plains Forecast
Crippling blizzard conditions and an additional 6 inches or more of snow is expected in parts of the rolling plains of west Texas, with drifts up to 10 feet or more making travel impossible in eastern New Mexico and west Texas into at least Monday.
Farther north and east, a swath of 5 to 12 inches of snow is forecast from central and northeast Kansas to eastern Nebraska, far northwest Missouri, Iowa, southeast South Dakota, southern Minnesota, Wisconsin (lighter in southeast) and Upper Michigan.
In addition to the snow, some additional ice accumulations could be locally significant from the eastern Texas panhandle into parts of west-central Oklahoma.

Some accumulating snow is likely in New England and Upstate New York Monday night through early Wednesday. The heaviest accumulations will be in northern New England and northern New York. Parts of southern New England will see some accumulating snow before changing to a wintry mix or rain.
