Local authorities closed off a Rhode Island street on Tuesday when a large sinkhole opened up in the roadway.
One pickup truck was stuck partially underwater in the sinkhole before the vehicle was eventually pulled out. Local police said that the driver of the truck was rescued safely from the vehicle.
The sinkhole was reported at the intersection of Hunt and Liberty streets in Central Falls, a suburb of Rhode Island's capital city of Providence, around midday Tuesday.
Heavy rain moved across southern New England on Tuesday with numerous reports of flash flooding across Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Some of the heaviest rain was measured in the hour leading up to the time of the sinkhole opening up. Nearly a half inch of rain fell at nearby T.F. Green Airport in Providence from 11 a.m. to noon with observations indicating heavy rain, fog and reduced visibility.

The National Weather Service in Taunton, Massachusetts, reported that several other roads were flooded out and impassable Tuesday. Rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches were common, with most of that rain falling over a relatively short span of time, making travel difficult and in the case of this sinkhole, dangerous.
While it is unclear if flash flooding was the sole cause of creating the sinkhole, heavy rain late Tuesday morning likely contributed.
