The Australian capital of Canberra received its first widespread snowfall since 2006 yesterday, causing a stir online as local residents and media outlets rushed to post photos and videos of the rare snowfall on social media.
Snow fell in the northern part of the city for about half an hour starting at noon yesterday, after a cold front brought cool air, creating the right conditions for frozen precipitation. The event left a dusting at elevations down to about 2,100 feet above sea level, a spokesperson for Australia's Bureau of Meteorology told ABC.
"I am just as excited as many people across Canberra this morning to finally see snow falling in the suburbs of Canberra after a couple of very close calls already this year," said Sean Carson in an interview with ABC.
The snow and ice forced the closure of a few main roads in the city, which is the seat of the Australian national government and home to just over 380,000 people. Snow was reported falling around the Parliament building and at the training headquarters of the Canberra Raiders National Rugby League team.
