Washington, D.C., and Baltimore will catch a break from heat and humidity late this week, but umbrellas will be needed.
Temperatures on Thursday will be held 5 to 10 degrees below Wednesday's highs, but sunshine will not compliment the heat relief.
Steadier rain will follow Thursday night, occasionally accompanied by a rumble of thunder, before gradually tapering off on Friday.
If the storm system responsible for the wet weather is slower to depart, Friday's rain will lag behind longer. That would be especially true across the toward the Delmarva Peninsula.
The rain and thunderstorms threatens to interfere with the series between the Nationals and Diamondbacks, as well as other outdoor activities. A slower commute will also result for both motorists and airline passengers.

Widespread severe weather is not expected, but any thunderstorm brings the risk of being struck by lightning to anyone outside.
The storm should clear Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia by the weekend, allowing dry weather and sunshine to return without heat and humidity following suit.
The storm will leave a lingering fly in the ointment for beachgoers at the Atlantic Ocean. Seas will become rough as the system strengthens offshore.
