Winter Storm Iola Blankets the Northeast and New England with Snow

January 23,2015

The winter storm that pummeled the Southwest mid-week moved into the populated East Coast on Saturday. States and cities in the path of the storm were blanketed with snow, and hundreds of accidents were reported in Buffalo by early Saturday evening.
Winter storm watches and warnings continue to be in effect for portions of Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, southeastern New Hampshire and eastern Maine. Winter Storm Iola will continue to affect portions of these states Saturday evening before quickly moving into southeastern Canada.

In Washington, D.C., snow trucks were deployed Friday afternoon and were expected to continue to treat roads through the night.
The Maryland State Highway Administration is warning drivers that travel may become dicey. Salt trucks and plows were on hand to treat the roads, and the agency says it's preparing for the storms while state officials were also working to keep public transportation moving safely.

As of 6 p.m. Friday evening, Newburgh, New York, city manager Michael G. Ciara declared a snow emergency for the city, and alternate side of the street parking regulations were enforced, according to a press release.
The NYC Department of Sanitation issued a snow alert, which sends more than 400 salt spreaders onto the roads Friday night. Sanitation workers will be on 12-hour shifts through the duration of the storm.
Ahead of Iola's arrival, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged New York drivers to exercise caution on the roads, according to a press release from the governor's office.
Connecticut DOT was also gearing up. The department said it's snow plow fleet was ready, and some units began treating highways and bridges Friday.
The region may not have much of a break between wintry systems, even once Winter Storm Iola moves through. A clipper could create headaches Sunday night into Monday, just in time for millions of people to return to work and school.
