WeatherWhys for October 4,2016 from accuweather.com

There are fewer thunderstorms across the United States in October as the ingredients needed for development change. A low sun angle creates less surface heating and a reduction of warm rising air. At the same time, mild air aloft leftover from the summer acts like a lid. The result is less rising air that is needed for thunderstorm development.
