Brief surge of mild air to pour into northeastern US this week

After a cool start to the week across the northeastern U.S., milder air will settle in across the region through Thursday.
The change to cooler weather was especially noticeable across interior sections of the Northeast where conditions ranging from scattered frost to a hard freeze occurred during early Tuesday morning.
By Wednesday, places like Buffalo and Elmira, New York; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and Morgantown, West Virginia, will experience highs in the 70s F again.

On Thursday, high temperatures will be in the low 70s in Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; New York City; Hartford, Connecticut; and Providence, Rhode Island.
It will be warm enough during the afternoons that most people will be comfortable with short sleeves during outdoor activities. It will still be cool enough during the evening and morning hours to warrant a jacket or sweater.
This warmup will occur ahead of a cold front that will move through the Northeast on Thursday and bring showers to the region.
While the rain is not expected to be heavy, wet roads can slow travel times. Motorists should use caution, especially on secondary highways, where leaves have begun to fall.
The rain will be welcome to an area that is in the midst of a drought. However, this front will not produce rainfall amounts that are needed to impact the drought. By comparison, the rain from this past weekend had more effect to ease dry conditions in some locations.

This front will bring another shot of cool air in its wake on Friday.
"There will be additional cold fronts, but the bulk of these will have little rainfall," AccuWeather Long-Range Meteorologist Jack Boston said.
Boston added that high pressure areas will move into the northeastern U.S. from the west and northwest behind each front. Overall, these will leave daytime highs near normal, but nights may average below normal.
For those looking to venture out this weekend to check out the fall foliage, the Northeast will be under the influence of one of these areas of high pressure. Aside from patchy morning fog, this will promote sunny and generally seasonable temperatures with excellent visibility for leaf peepers and other outdoor enthusiasts.
