The first meteorological satellite was launched on April 1, 1960. The
satellite was called TIROS 1 and was 42 inches in diameter, 19 inches
high and weighted 270 pounds. TIROS I was operational for 78 days and
proved that satellites could be a useful tool for surveying weather
conditions around the world from space.
