Numerous reports of a bright green fireball over the Midwest flooded social media early Monday.
The American Meteor Society (AMS) said that it had received over 220 reports of the event, which was primarily seen over Illinois and Wisconsin. Other sightings of the meteor came in from Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Kentucky, New York and even Ontario, Canada.
The first sightings were reported around 1:27 a.m. CST.
A preliminary estimated trajectory from the AMS indicated the meteor was traveling southwest to northeast before its flight ended over Lake Michigan between Sheboygan and Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Numerous sightings of the meteor were captured on police dashcam recordings and traffic cameras.
