The Sommerwerft Theater Festival in Frankfurt will join western and southern Germany in enduring daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms into early next week.
The combination of a slow-moving storm system dropping toward Italy and a new system approaching from the United Kingdom will lead to persistent unsettled weather.
Thunderstorms will be most numerous from Rhineland-Pfalz to Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, and will occasionally unleash downpours.
Outdoor plans will be threatened daily by the storminess in Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Nuremberg and Munich.
The Sommerwerft Theater Festival has begun in Frankfurt along the Main River. Running through 7 August, the festival features theater, music, poetry, dance, film and other arts.
The afternoon and evening hours will be the most active time for the showers, thunderstorms and the resulting disruptions to the festival and any other outdoor activities.
Residents and festivalgoers should be prepared to seek shelter as soon as thunder is heard.
Worse than forcing some people indoors for a time, the slow movement of any locally heavy showers and thunderstorms may trigger localized flash flooding.
Continuing the threat from late in the week, a few of the thunderstorms could also turn severe with damaging winds and hail.

A warm and moderately humid air mass will help fuel the daily storminess. Highs will generally average 25-29 C (77-84 F) with the highest temperatures expected where thunderstorms will be less frequent.
There will be sunny spells outside of any showers and thunderstorms. Anyone planning to spend time outdoors will want to apply sunscreen.
Umbrellas and rain gear can be left at home this weekend and Monday in Hamburg, Berlin and Dresden.
"A weak area of high pressure will keep much of northeastern Germany dry," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dan Baker said. "This will keep the stormy weather at bay and off to the west."
Warmth will instead dominate with highs trending upward from around 26-28 C (79-82 F) on Saturday to 28-31 C (83-88 F) on Monday. Humidity will not be as high as points to the west.
On Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms will finally return to northeastern Germany.
Southern and western Germany should see a brief decrease in the stormy weather for the second half of next week.
