The Cessna 441 aircraft took off Monday morning from Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Florida bound for Cairo, Georgia. "A line of weakening thunderstorms was moving north into the area at the time of the incident," said weather.com senior meteorologist Nick Wiltgen. "These could have created downdrafts and turbulence. In addition, cloud ceilings at the nearby Thomasville Regional Airport were only 400 feet at the time, so outside of a controlled runway landing, getting a plane down safely in an emergency would have been a very tough task."
According to WFLX, the
Federal Aviation Administration issued an alert notice after the plane
disappeared from radar. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the
plane about two miles west of Cairo-Grady County Airport.

Georgia State Patrol Post 12 commander Sgt. First Class Tommy Peeples told the Times that search efforts were hampered by the weather conditions as the low cloud cover and lack of visibility from the air limited use of the GSP helicopter.
