A brief blast of summer-like heat will traverse eastern Australia early this week, bringing well above-average temperatures to areas from Newcastle to Canberra. A cold front will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms, ending the heat by Wednesday.
This hot spell across across eastern Australia will be the third shot of much above-average conditions across the region so far this month. The first two bursts of heat caused temperatures to soar to over 38 C (100 F) in Sydney. Temperature peaked at 43 C (109 F) on November 20.
While this heatwave will not be as intense as its predecessors, temperatures will still soar to over 10 degrees C (18 degrees F) above average in some areas.
Low humidity and a gusty wind will also increase the wildfire threat across eastern Queensland.
The hottest day in Sydney and Canberra will be Tuesday, when the high will climb to 35 C (95 F) and 33 C (91 F), respectively.

Detailed Forecast for Sydney
Detailed Forecast for Canberra
A cold front that will bring cooler air to Melbourne on Tuesday will reach eastern Queensland on Tuesday night, ushering in more comfortable conditions for Wednesday.
Between Monday and Tuesday, Melbourne will see a (10-15 degree F) drop in temperature. Communities from Newcastle to Canberra will see a similar, or larger, drop in temperatures from Tuesday into Wednesday.
While there will be a few showers and thunderstorms associated with the frontal passage, it should not be a significant rain-maker and some locations will remain dry. Temperatures will remain seasonable through the second half of the week.
