Hurricane Wilma formed toward the tail end of the 2005 hurricane season
which was the most active hurricane season in recorded history.
Twenty-eight tropical storms and hurricanes occurred, and four reached
Category 5 intensity on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Never before in the
framework of accurate records have so many powerful hurricanes formed in
the Atlantic during one season. The Category 5 storms during 2005 were
Emily, Katrina, Rita and Wilma with Wilma becoming the most intense.
