Rain and snow showers developed across the Upper Midwest, while the outerbands of Hurricane Sandy brought rain and strong winds to Florida and the Bahamas on Thursday. Sandy has reached category 2 hurricane strength with maximum winds up to 105 mph and is currently located over the southern most Islands of the Bahamas. A tropical storm warning has been issued for eastern Florida, while a hurricane warning remains in effect for most of the Bahamas. Rainfall totals have ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 inches in southeastern Florida, while parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic have seen rainfall totals from 6 to 12 inches.

Meanwhile to the north, a low pressure system in Canada continued to push a cold front eastward through the Upper Midwest and into the Great Lakes, which extended down the Mississippi River Valley. The system kicked up scattered showers and thunderstorms ahead of the front, some of which turned severe across parts of the Great Lakes with strong winds and large hail. Wind gusts up to 58 mph were reported in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, while 1 inch in diameter hail was reported in Schofield, Wisconsin. Behind this system, cool air poured in from Canada and created a combination of rain and snow showers across Minnesota. Snowfall totals ranged around an inch in most of northern Minnesota.

In the West, scattered rain and mountain snow showers continued for parts of the Rockies and Great Basin throughout the day. Another 4 to 8 inches of snow developed at highest elevations of northern Utah and Colorado.
