While the short term forecast calls for over a foot of snow in parts of the Northeast, a widespread chill will take hold of the region late in the week.
A blast of arctic air will deliver the coldest weather so far this winter to the Northeast with widespread highs in the teens and single digits.
People should take proper measures to cope with the harsh cold. This includes measures as simple as wearing extra layers when going outside to making sure to bring your animals indoors to keep them protected from the arctic air.
The frigid arctic air is set to blast in during the day on Thursday with snow showers and a biting wind from the north.
These winds will make it feel even colder with AccuWeather.com RealFeel® Temperatures 15 to 30 degrees lower than the actual air temperature.
With the arctic air entrenched over the region, Friday looks to be the coldest day of the week from Baltimore to Boston and west through Detroit. Some areas of northern New England may even fail to climb above zero degrees F during the day on Friday.
The lowest temperatures are expected in areas where there will be a fresh, deep snowpack following the early week storm. This zone generally stretches from western New York to coastal areas of New England.
Frigid days will be followed by even colder nights with temperatures in some spots dipping lower than 20 degrees below zero.
Low temperatures should not be this extreme closer to the coast, but the temperature may still dip into the single digits in New York City and below zero in Boston.
The worst of the cold will remain locked over Canada with parts of northern Quebec and Ontario remaining below zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 Celsius) for several days in a row.
People that must spend time in the outdoors should dress accordingly. Without the proper protection from the cold and wind, you run the risk of contracting frostbite or hypothermia.
Early indications suggest that a reinforcing shot of arctic air will quickly follow this initial blast, arriving during the latter part of next weekend.
This would result in a prolonged cold spell for the Northeast bringing temperatures just as low as the first push of arctic air.
"What makes this stretch of arctic air different than previous cold spells this winter is the duration," said AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Becky Elliott.
A prolonged cold snap of this nature could cause additional issues across the region, such as the threat for water main breaks.
"Many cities across New England will spend several days below 10 degrees," said Elliott.

While AccuWeather.com meteorologists have high confidence with the timing and intensity of the arctic outbreak, there is some uncertainty concerning the system responsible for ushering the air into the region.
Depending on the track of the low pressure system, it could develop into a nor'easter off the coast of New England late on Thursday into Friday.
If this does occur, it could deliver a plowable snow to southern New England, including the Boston area.
"With the prolonged cold expected across the region, the piles of snow are here to stay," added Elliott.
Any fresh snowfall will add to the already 20 to 30 inches on the ground across Massachusetts.
"Snowfall removal will continue to be problematic and will leave roadways and sidewalks difficult to traverse" warned Elliott.
Continue to check back with AccuWeather.com over the coming days for more information about the potential for a late-week nor'easter.
- Christopher Aaron Evans · Follow · Administrator at Central Appalachian and Ohio Valley WeatherEveryone just needs to give Meteorologists a break and not hound on them bc they got a forecast wrong they are only doing their jobs.....working with weather is not an easy job.....Mets just don't set on their butts in front of a Computer or a Camera all day they go out and take measurements of the atmosphere, measure snow amounts and rain amounts....some even survey damages left by a storm and they also go out and do reports in Snowstorms, Hurricanes, Severe Weather...they risk their lives to keep everyone safe.....just because they get a forecast wrong it isn't their fault....when the storm changes it's path at last moment or when a storm doesn't form as predicted or isn't as strong as predicted that is just Mother Nature doing her thing, not the Mets because they can't control the weather they just forecast and predict it to keep everyone safe from her wrath.....Meteorlogists have a hard job and yes they do become frustrated if they don't get a forecast right...I may not have my degree yet but I even get frustrated when I don't get something right...it's a part of life....if we didn't have them then we wouldn't know what kind of weather we'd get until it hit. Many bag on them when they should be thanking them for all the hard work they do in keeping us safe!

- Michael Pannoni · Top CommenterWhile the cold won't be as impressive in Maryland, considering the lack of snow cover down here, 20F below normal with an increasing sun angle (highs forecast to be in the mid-20s) is quite impressive. I hope the plants make it through the non-insulated ground. At least any ski resorts nearby will be making snow for anybody who really wants it. As much as the upper Northeast has gotten buried, Maryland/Southern PA/South Jersey/Delaware/DC's winter has plain out SUCKED. Not enough dry, mild days and when its cold, no snow and some cold rainy days. "Give me snow or give me spring!"
- Cory Morrison · Follow · Top Commenter · Sheridan College, OakvilleBack in January when my area in Southern Ontario was in a snow drought, I had this fleeting hope that the lack of snow would modify any arctic air masses, and we still had several frigid days well below average despite the lack of snow on the ground.
Now that there is a lot of snow on the ground in my area, this arctic air may only be worse.
- David Gerard Turco · Top Commenter · University of Rhode Island3rd horrid New England winter in a row with above ave. snow and below ave temps. And with the added bonus of being on the coast we get more wind than anybody else. Even at 34 deg right now with 15 mph wind over wet snow it is RAW, Can't wait for the -8 predicted for next Sat morning. Extended forecast for March is equivalent to an average January. I want global warming and I want it now!

- David Colantuono · Top Commenter · Works at UnemployedOnce again, we're in the path of a wintry mix instead of just snow. We have some snow on the ground, but it's not all that impressive. Looking out my window, I'm guessing there's about...uhhh...3 or 4 inches with a few areas of ground peeking through. That said, I don't think it's going to be extremely cold after this storm unless it brings us a good dose of snow instead of a mix of snow/ice/rain.
I wanted a Winter with snowstorms and frigid temperatures, not these ice storms that bring dangerous conditions and prolonged power outages. We've been lucky so far, but I wonder how long our luck will hold out with storms bringing mostly ice to the region. I live in New Jersey near the Morris County/Somerset County border. I don't know if that's considered Northern or Central New Jersey, but that's where I live. - Conrad Paolucci · Top Commenter · Comsewogue Senior High Schoolthis NE weather sucks to high heaven,,,, is there anywhere , where there are temperatures of between 45 and 75, thru out the year,, too cold sux, too hot w/ humidity sux,,,
