While thunderstorms are less common in the winter, thundersnow can sometimes occur. The stage is set for thundersnow where there is relatively strong instability and plenty of moisture above the surface, such as above a warm front or in the midst of a potent winter storm. Intense lake-effect snow bands or squalls can also produce thundersnow.
