Storms to Drench, Slow Tuesday Commute NYC to Chicago

A mosaic of showers and thunderstorms will make the trek back to work after the Memorial Day holiday a bit more difficult from the Midwest to the mid-Atlantic and New England.
According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Brett Anderson, "While the majority of the storms will stop short of becoming severe, a few communities can be hit with heavy rainfall and locally gusty winds on Tuesday."
Since many locations may be hit with several downpours, the greatest risk to commuters and property owners will be isolated incidents of flash and urban flooding.

The downpours can be intense enough to bring sudden low visibility, which could impact motorists along the I-64, I-70, I-80, I-81, I-90 and I-95 corridors.
Cities that can be hit by disruptive downpours and/or locally gusty thunderstorms on Tuesday include Minneapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston and Charleston, West Virginia.
As a result, airline passengers traveling to, from and connecting in these cities should anticipate delays.
"Widely separated thunderstorms will fire over areas from southern Virginia to the Carolinas and Georgia on Tuesday," Anderson said.
The rainfall from the Midwest to the Atlantic coast can also cause disruptions to construction and other outdoor projects that resume right after the holiday weekend.

By Wednesday, drier and cooler air will push into the upper Great Lakes and much of New England, reducing the amount of showers. However, the potential for multiple drenching showers and thunderstorms will continue over much of the Midwest and the mid-Atlantic and will expand more into the Southeast through Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the system responsible for drenching rainfall over central Texas and the southern Plains during the Memorial Day weekend will crawl eastward.
According to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Paul Walker, "During Tuesday and Wednesday, the heavy rainfall, risk of flash flooding and locally gusty winds will focus over northeastern Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas."
Cities that may experience disruptions to travel and daily activities include Houston, New Orleans and Little Rock, Arkansas.
