An area of low pressure drove precipitation across the western portion
of the U.S. on Thursday, while rain and snow moved across the southern
Plains, the lower Mississippi Valley and the Gulf Coast.
A low pressure system skimmed across the West Coast on Thursday, which
brought a blast of rainy weather to Oregon and California, as well as
snow showers to the Cascades and the Sierras. Winter storm warnings and
winter weather advisories were issued across the Pacific Northwest and
parts of the Southwest, as Lake Tahoe, Calif., reported a midday total
of 9.0 inches of snow, while Squaw Valley, Calif., also reported a
midday total of 9.0 inches of snow. The heaviest rain associated with
this system pushed across northern California and southern Oregon, as
San Francisco, Calif., reported a midday total of 0.64 inches of rain,
while San Jose, Calif., reported a midday total of 0.61 inches of rain.
A very cold air mass swept across the upper Intermountain West, the
northern Plains and the upper Midwest on Thursday as wind chill
advisories were issued across a handful of states. Cut Bank, Mont.
recorded a morning low of -35 degrees with a wind chill factor of -48
degrees, while Butte, Mont., recorded a morning low of -34 degrees with a
wind chill factor of -50 degrees. To the south, an onshore flow from
the Gulf of Mexico brought showers and thunderstorms to the Gulf Coast
and Southeast, as well as spotty snow showers to the southern Plains and
the lower Mississippi Valley. The majority of the Eastern Seaboard
avoided precipitation on Thursday.
