WeatherWhys for July 11,2013

Thunderstorms typically interfere with the steady climb of temperatures during the afternoon. Downdrafts within thunderstorms bring much cooler air from high in the atmosphere down to the Earth's surface, causing the temperature in some cases to lower by as much as 20 degrees in an extremely short period of time. This is why thunderstorms can also be regarded as nature's air conditioners.
