Thunderstorms that form purely from strong solar heating and high humidity are called air mass thunderstorms. No fronts or strong areas of low pressure are involved. Simply, heated surface air rises forming towering clouds that become thunderstorms. This type of storm rarely spawns tornadoes, but can produce very heavy rainfall.
