US National Weather Summary for July 18,2013,from weatherunderground.com

The main weather story across the nation remained the hot temperatures across the East and Midwest. A broad ridge of high pressure continued to build over the Eastern states and maintained warm and humid conditions from the Midwest, Ohio River Valley, and Northeast on Thursday. This kept heat index values near 100 degrees or greater for the region. Thus, heat advisories have been issued for most areas. Heat index values ranged from 103 to 109 degrees for the Midwest, with some parts of the East seeing heat index values over 110 degrees. Baltimore, Maryland saw a mid-day high heat index value up to 115 degrees, with a high temperature at 95 degrees.

Elsewhere, a frontal boundary over the Great Lakes produced scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Upper Midwest on Thursday afternoon. This increased chances of severe thunderstorm development, with a moderate risk issued for northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin for the afternoon and evening hours. These storms were expected to produce large hail, strong winds, periods of heavy rainfall, and possibly a few tornadoes.

In the West, a low pressure system over the Southwest continues pushing monsoonal moisture northward across the Desert Southwest. This produced shower and thunderstorm activity that reached from Arizona and New Mexico, into Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.
