An unusually warm July in Beijing is about to get a little hotter as temperatures are projected to soar to around 37-38°C (100°F) on Wednesday and possibly again on Thursday.
The heat and poor air quality in the region will make spending long periods of time outdoors problematic for some folks, especially the very young and elderly.
Beijing's highest temperature of the year so far came on July 4th when the high peaked at 37.5°C (100°F). While temperatures in the upper 30s (near 100) are unusually hot, it is not unprecedented for Beijing to hit or flirt with 100°F at least once or twice on any given year. Their hottest temperature over the last 20 years occurred on July 24th 1999 when the high climbed to 42.2°C (108°F).
The two-day heat snap is due to a ridge of high pressure building into Beijing and the surrounding Provinces of Tianjin, Hebei and Shanxi.
A disturbance will bring clouds and the threat for some rain and thunderstorms on Friday, which will cool temperatures down to near or even a couple of degrees below average for latter July (average for Beijing is 30.6°C, or 88°F).
