The Fourth of July weekend will start off unsettled across the northern Plains with severe thunderstorms set to roll through the region on Saturday afternoon and into Saturday night.
These storms may force the cancelation of outdoor holiday festivities for people in the Twin Cities, as well as Fargo, N.D. and Rapid City S.D.
Thunderstorms will also cause headaches for travelers, especially those taking to the sky as thunderstorms that quickly develop may delay flights with little warning.
A few thunderstorms may move through on Saturday morning; however, the worst of the storms will hold off until the afternoon and evening hours.
Severe storms that develop will have the potential to produce large hail as well as damaging wind gusts that can blow down trees and knock over power lines.
Additionally, a few stronger storms may spin up a brief tornado during the evening hours.

While not all thunderstorms will become severe, they will still be accompanied by frequent lightning.
If you are enjoying the holiday weekend in the outdoors, be sure to keep an eye to the sky for rapidly changing weather conditions. If you can hear thunder or see lightning, you are at risk for being struck and should seek shelter until the storm has passed.
