Flooding Downpour Risk Detroit to Pittsburgh Monday

A complex of thunderstorms will trek into Detroit and Pittsburgh spanning Monday night providing blinding rains and occasional gusty winds.
Areas from Detroit to Fort Wayne were affected Monday afternoon with much of Ohio being impacted through the evening.
Downpours and pockets of gusty winds will create headaches for those traveling from Buffalo, N.Y., and Cleveland to Columbus and Cincinnati.

Flooding will be the main concern with this line of showers and storms. Excessive rainfall since early June in the Midwest and mid-Atlantic has left many areas prone to flash flooding.
Areas from Detroit to Pittsburgh experienced above-average rainfall for the month of June with Cleveland getting over two times the normal amount.
The saturated state of the ground means that rainfall from any drenching shower or storm will run off, resulting in flooding of low-lying areas and rapid rises on small streams.

The run-off increases the risk for neighboring streets and highways to become flooded. Areas prone to flooding during times of heavy rain should be avoided, and alternative routes should be planned.
Traffic problems due to weather shouldn't be an issue in and around Pittsburgh Monday evening. Showers and storms will impact the area later tonight, well after the typical drive home. However, rainfall overnight around the Steel City could lead to flash flooding.
Aside from the flooding, pockets of gusty winds could also present problems as these showers and storms roll through.
Additional showers and storms may flare up later Monday night providing Detroit and Fort Wayne with another potential round of downpours.
As the disturbance treks southeastward through Tuesday night, areas around Washington, D.C., may get some drenching showers also.
