A Blue Moon is not dubbed as such for its color, but refers to the second full moon in a calendar month or the third full moon of four in a season. The first full moon of the month occurred on July 2.
The moon was at its fullest at 6:43 a.m. EDT on Friday morning but was visible through Friday night for regions with clear skies.

Those who missed the opportunity to witness the Blue Moon this time will have a chance again in 2018.
