Danny Impacts: Flights Canceled, Cruise Itineraries Altered

August 24,2015
Danny continues to weaken and has degenerated into a trough of low pressure, but several Caribbean islands are still preparing for the possibility of threats from flooding and mudslides in the coming days as the storm closes in.
Months without rain have left Haiti and Puerto Rico bone dry, and officials in both nations are closely monitoring the situation. Even if Danny continues to weaken, rainfall could lead to serious problems in a region with a long history of fatal mudslides.  Meteorologists for The Weather Channel are forecasting between 2 and 5 inches of rain across the Caribbean, with higher totals possible in specific locations.

JUST IN: downgraded to a tropical depression, still beneficial rain for drought-stricken Puerto Rico/Virgin Is

“[Danny is] a concern for us. It's been really, really dry,” meteorologist technician Rosalina Vazquez at the National Weather Service in San Juan, Puerto Rico told The Miami Herald. While she advised the public not to panic, Vazquez said that they should stay alert.
In Haiti, government officials sat in meetings late this week analyzing the situation and the country’s preparedness including available supplies. The country’s Office of Civil Protection posted on its Facebook page that the storm does not pose a threat to the nation in its current location.
Antigua-based airline LIAT canceled nearly 40 flights from Sunday to Tuesday, the Associated Press reported, and regional carrier Seaborne Airlines also warned of delays and cancelations.
Cruise liners have also adjusted routes and ports of call for several of their ships, according to Cruise Critic.
Danny was downgraded to a tropical depression Monday morning and degenerated again later in the morning. It is not expected to strengthen as it moves over Puerto Rico and Hispaniola.
